Bioface

Evaluation of Face Recognition Systems

Introduction

Passbild einer Person mit Linien, die das Gesicht in Felder teilen

The use of biometric face recognition is planned in many application fields. This includes the main field for biometrics - access control - but also surveillance and others.

The project line BIOFACE examines the performance of face recognition algorithms and systems. It is split into three projects.

BIOFACE I

In BIOFACE I up to 200.000 face images were collected into a database and classified for various image factors that give additional information to build test datasets with certain characteristics.

BIOFACE II

The second part - BIOFACE II - focussed on examining the behaviour and performance of face recognition algorithms and systems in big data sets. It was split into two phases: an algorithm test and a system test.

In the algorithm test several face recognition software products were faced with data sets from BIOFACE I while in the system test autonomous systems were installed in a access control area of site. These observed the entrance area and logged all recognised persons. In comparing these logs to an access chronicle the recognition rates could be computed.

The public report on BIOFACE I and BIOFACE II can be downloaded from the BSI web server:

BIOFACE III

In this project the influence of disturbance factors on actual face recognition algorithms has been examined. This includes problems that arise from the person itself (e.g. mimic), photographic factors (contrast, resolution, over- and underexposure, blur) and view problems (non front al view, head rotation). The final report will be available from the BSI website shortly.

BIOFACE V

Gesicht als 3D-Grafik

After the detailed examinations of face recognition based on two-dimensional images is the previous project steps BIOFACE V focuses on the three-dimensional acquisition and comparison of the face.

Similar to BIOFACE II several devices are tested in a system test running in live mode and the recognition perfomance is evaluated.
